Lock Picking VS Lock Bumping

We are talking about 2 major door unlocking techniques that are used by skilled locksmiths to open doors. They have been gaining lots of attention lately as lots of people are deeply curious about which method is better or more acceptable and many are also very interested to learn how to apply these methods themselves, but often feel discouraged because of limited available information. Here is a detailed explanation about both techniques, what are the difference and how they work:

Lock Picking

Lock picking is a well-known technique used to bypass a lock, it is a sophisticate way to unlock it without using a key. It involves exploiting weaknesses in the lock design to achieve the same result like using a key.

If you wish to pick a lock it involves using 2 tools, a tension wrench and a pick tool. Take the tension wrench and insert it into the keyhole in its bottom and with the help of your your thumb put light pressure on it, just like turning a key but not all the way. Then you need to use the pick tool to lift the pins inside the lock and to align them one by one.

Each pin needs to be set up to the right height in order for the lock to be open. Once all the pins are in place the tension on the wrench will make it tun eventually and unlock the lock.

Lock Bumping

Lock bumping is different way to unlock a door without a key and it works in another manner from lock picking. In this method a specially cut key called a “bump key” is being used instead of the picking tools.

The bump key is designed to jump up the pins in the lock and bypass when it is struck. A bump key is a regular key that has been filed down so that all the cuts are at the same dept. To bump a lock insert the bump key into the lock like a normal key but don’t turn it, just gently apply tension on the key like you would pressure the wrench in a lock pick.

Now use a small hammer to hit the back of the key. The force from the bump causes the pins within the lock to jump up to the right height and when they are aligned with the shear line it unlock the lock. It might required few “bumps” before it happens.

Conclusion

Lock picking method is better if you want more control and precision, especially with standard locks but you need certain skill level to preform it correctly. It takes time and lots of practice but it’s quieter and more professional.

Lock bumping is faster and much easier method, but it can be loud and much more noisy than lock picking. You should also take in account that it might not work on all locks and different lock brands uses different bump keys.
